Gut Instinct. Intuition. Simply having a feeling. Strange how we can’t quite put a finger on what it is, but we all know it’s there. So why aren’t we making time to listen to it?

follow-your-heart-and-intuitionIn today’s workplace, so many stimuli, demands and pressures are external, and they require an immediate response. We rarely allocate ourselves enough time to reflect on past experiences, whether conscious or subconscious, and on what our gut has to say. Yet, for some reason, when we do make time to follow our instincts, or at least listen to them, they often turn out to be right.

Have you ever regretted going with your gut?

red-flagPersonally, I haven’t. In fact, I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, so I try to follow my intuition as much as possible, both personally and professionally. And how different my life would be right now if I didn’t! For starters, I wouldn’t be working at Farrell Associates or indeed writing this blog if I had ignored my instincts. I would, in fact, be in-between placements of a PGCE course. But, I had that feeling and, after a couple of red flags, I withdrew my application. A few months later, while I was job hunting, I had several calls from recruiters, trying to recruit me to their team, and I just knew that those jobs weren’t for me.

My instinct waved a big green flag, and after a bit of pre-interview research into the company, I knew instinctively I would like to work here. I met the team during my interview process and I had a feeling I could learn so much from the people I might be around every day.

And, you know what? I was right!

In some ways, listening to your gut can be linked with mindfulness. It requires an awareness of your present thoughts and feelings towards a situation, and an objective acknowledgement of them. It’s from this awareness and recognition of your thoughts and emotions that you can make decisions, and go with your gut.
